SEPTEMBER 9
1956:Elvis Presley makes his first appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show, gyrating his hips and ushering the rock ‘n’ roll era into the homes of about 44 percent of all Americans owning televisions.

1893: President Grover Cleveland’s wife, Frances, gives birth to a daughter. Esther Cleveland is the only child of a president to be born in the White House.

1957: President Dwight Eisenhower signs the Civil Rights Act of 1957 into law; it is the first civil rights bill to pass Congress since the Reconstruction Era.
