1921:The first Miss America pageant is held in Atlantic City, N.J., as a two-day event intended to encourage tourism. Sixteen-year-old Margaret Gorman, Miss Washington, D.C., wins the title.

1927: Television pioneer Philo T. Farnsworth successfully transmits an image—a simple straight line—through his image dissector camera tube in San Francisco. It is the first fully electronic television system.

1993: Joycelyn Elders is confirmed as surgeon general of the United States. She is the first African American and the second woman to hold the position as top spokesperson for public health in the federal government.
