1919:Racehorse Man O’War is defeated for the first and only time by the appropriately named Upset at the Sanford Stakes in Saratoga Springs, N.Y.

1961: East Germany seals off the border between East and West Berlin and begins construction of the Berlin Wall, which will stand until November 1989. East Berliners are forbidden from fleeing the communist half of the city or even holding jobs in the West.

2008: With victories in the 200-meter butterfly and 4x200-meter freestyle relay, American swimmer Michael Phelps becomes the winner of the most gold medals in modern Olympic history. By the end of the Beijing Games, Phelps will hold 14 Olympic gold medals.
