JUNE 12
1964:Nelson Mandela is sentenced to life in prison for sabotage of the South African government. He will eventually serve 27 years behind bars, win the Nobel Peace Prize and become South Africa’s first black president.

1967: In the unanimous Loving v. Virginia decision, the Supreme Court declares state laws prohibiting interracial marriage to be unconstitutional.

1987: On a visit to the divided German city of Berlin, President Ronald Reagan demands that Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev “tear down this wall.”
