2005:Pope John Paul II dies in his Vatican apartment. He was 84.

1865: President Jefferson Davis deserts Richmond, the Confederate capital, as the Union army overruns Confederate lines 25 miles to the south.

1917: President Woodrow Wilson appeals to Congress to declare war on Germany, saying: “The world must be made safe for democracy.”
