OCTOBER 21
1879: Thomas Edison’s light bulb burns for more than 13 hours, making it the first workable incandescent light.

1917: The first American soldiers go into combat in France during World War I.

1975: Red Sox catcher Carlton Fisk flails his arms in hopes his hit won’t go foul during the 12th inning of World Series game 6. The ball hits the foul pole and stays fair. Boston beats the Cincinnati Reds 7-6.
