1931: Mob boss Al Capone is found guilty of income tax evasion and sentenced to 11 years in prison. He serves eight.

1933: Albert Einstein, now a refugee from Nazi Germany, arrives in New York.

1989: Countless people escape death from a San Francisco-area earthquake, leaving work early to see game 3 of the World Series between San Francisco and Oakland on TV. A total of 63 people die.
