OCTOBER 18
1977 West German commandos rush Lufthansa jet at Somali airport, saving all 86 hostages and killing three of the four Palestinian and Lebanese hijackers.

1968: U.S. athletes Tommie Smith and John Carlos are expelled from the Olympics for their black-power demonstration at the awards ceremony.

1989: East German leader and Berlin Wall orchestrator Erich Honecker is ousted after 18 years in power.
