WHEN TRAVELING ABROAD

New rules regarding international travel went into effect June 1, 2009, as a part of the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative (WHTI). These new rules - part of the post-September 11 laws - require U.S. citizens to present a passport or other official document when re-entering the United States from Canada, Mexico, Bermuda, or the Caribbean by either land or sea.

Those returning by air have already had to present these documents for over two year. Travelers must now provide officials with one of the WHTI approved documents before re-entering the country. These forms of required identification include: a passport, passport card, enhanced drivers license, or trusted traveler program card.

Special requirements have been made for youth under 16 and groups of youth under 19. All of these requirements and more information on can be found on the U.S. Customs and Border Protection website: cbp.gov. For more information on how to acquire a passport or passport card, visit the U.S. Department of State’s travel website at travel.state.gov.
