1945:After 83 days of fighting, American troops capture the island of Okinawa in the Pacific campaign’s last crucial amphibious battle of WWII.

1940: American correspondent William Shirer witnesses Adolf Hitler’s great triumph as France signs an armistice with Germany in the same railroad car used for the signing of the World War I armistice.
