1967;The three-day Monterey International Pop Music Festival, featuring little-known rockers Jimi Hendrix and Janis Joplin, kicks off the Summer of Love.

1968: Waiting in line at a Dallas bank, Don Wetzel develops the idea for his new invention—a cash-dispensing machine, or the modern-day ATM.

1858: At the Illinois Republican convention, Abraham Lincoln paraphrases the Bible, declaring that “a house divided against itself cannot stand.”
