IS IT REALLY A MEAL?

"A sandwich is a sandwich, but a Manwich is a meal."

So went the popular ad campaign for “Manwich,” tomatoey goodness in a can, ready to be united in marriage to a package of ground beef and slobbered over a soft hamburger bun to overflowing. If your jaw doesn’t practically dislocate when you take a bite, and a clump of saucy meat doesn't drop onto your lap, you’ve failed to grasp the concept of the beloved sandwich known in some circles as the “Sloppy Joe.”

Manwich was introduced by Hunt’s Foods in 1969, providing a quick and easy meal in a can. The contents, a barbeque-flavored tomato sauce with chunks of green pepper and onion, are mixed in a skillet with browned ground beef. Once everything has coagulated nicely, the results are liberally applied to a hamburger bun. It’s messy, and yet wonderfully tasty.

In 2004, Manwich introduced a “Heat and Serve” version, providing microwaveable packets of both beef and sauce for added simplicity of preparation.

They say that the American family never sits and eats dinner together anymore. Certainly some of the blame must be put on those that chose to offer mere sandwiches to their loved ones. Don’t be part of the problem, be part of the solution. Grab a can of Manwich sauce and show your family that they are, indeed, loved. They will be forever grateful.
