Most of America’s forests are privately owned, but most landowners lack the expertise needed to properly manage their woodland ecosystems. The American Forest Foundation (forestfoundation.org) works with families, teachers, and elected officials to promote the protection and stewardship of America’s private forestland. As a leading source of information on threats such as disease, drought, fire, overdevelopment, and invasive pests and weeds, AFF is committed to preserving America’s forest heritage. One AFF program, the American Tree Farm System, acts as a support network for more than 89,000 private landowners, helping them to manage 27 million acres of forest. Another effort, Project Learning Tree, has provided half a million teachers nationwide with an award-winning environmental education curriculum, helping 75 million students to better understand complex environmental issues.
The charity has earned a four-star overall rating from Charity Navigator, which rates not-for-profit organizations on the strength of their finances, their control of administrative and fundraising expenses, and the transparency of their operations. Four stars is the group’s highest rating.
