 1975:Fugitive newspaper heiress Patty Hearst, who was kidnapped in February 1974 by the Symbionese Liberation Army, is captured in a San Francisco apartment and arrested for armed robbery, which she committed with her SLA captors.

1980: Cuban cosmonaut Arnaldo Tamayo Méndez is the first Latin American in space, blasting off with the crew of Soyuz 38 from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan.

1999: Chicago Cubs slugger Sammy Sosa hits his 60th home run of the season during a game against the Milwaukee Brewers. The Dominican-born Sosa becomes the first MLB player to hit 60 homers in consecutive seasons.


1919:Women in the Netherlands are given the right to vote

1851:The first ever issue of the New York Times is published, it was started by Henry Jarvis Raymond and George Jones.

1965:TV comedy show "Get Smart", starring Don Adams and produced by Mel Brooks, debuts

1977:The first photograph of the Earth and Moon together is taken by the Voyager I
