SEPTEMBER 14

1982:Princess Grace of Monaco dies of injuries sustained in a car accident near Monte Carlo on the previous day. Princess Grace was the iconic American film star Grace Kelly before her marriage to Rainier III, Prince of Monaco. Her daughter, 17-year-old Princess Stephanie, survives the crash.

1982: Lebanese president-elect Bashir Gemayel and 26 other members of his Phalange party are killed in Beirut by a bomb planted by Habib Tanious Shartouni of the Syrian Social Nationalist Party.

1987: Ernie Whitt, Rance Mulliniks, George Bell, Fred McGriff, Rob Ducey and Lloyd Moseby lead the Toronto Blue Jays to collectively set a still-standing Major League Baseball record, as the team hits 10 home runs in a single game. The Blue Jays handily defeat the Baltimore Orioles 18-3 at Exhibition Stadium in Toronto.

1969:U.S. restarts draft after WW II

1959:Luna 2, a soviet probe, becomes first man-made object to reach the moon

1741: George Frederick Handel completes the famous "Messiah"

1917:Russian Revolution: After the Tsar is overthrown, Russia is declared a Republic.

1998: MCI Communications and WorldCom complete a $37 billion merger, becoming MCI WorldCom.
