1954:First lady Mamie Eisenhower christens the USS Nautilus, the world's first nuclear-powered submarine,in Groton, Conn. Because of its power source, the Nautilus can stay submerged for extended periods of time.

1861:
Jefferson Davis, future president of the Confederate States of America, delivers a farewell address and resigns from the U.S. Senate, less than two weeks after Mississippi seceded from the Union.

1911:
Prince Albert I of Monaco hosts the first Monte Carlo Automobile Rally, in which 20 cars starting from different European cities race in cutting-edge automobiles toward Monte Carlo. French automobile dealer Henri Rougier would win Europe's oldest car rally, driving a Turcat-Méry at an average speed of 13 mph.
