JANUARY 18
1958:Canadian William O'Ree becomes the first black player in the National Hockey League, as he steps on the ice at right wing for the Boston Bruins, who defeat the Montreal Canadiens 3-0.

1911:
Eugene Ely makes the first airplane landing on a naval vessel, touching down his Curtiss biplane on the Navy cruiser USS Pennsylvania in San Francisco Bay. Only two months earlier, Ely successfully made the first airplane takeoff from the USS Birmingham.

1997:
Norwegian explorer Børge Ousland completes the first-ever solo crossing of the Antarctic — including passing by the South Pole — having walked or skied 1,675 miles over 64 days.
