JANUARY 20
1981:As President Ronald Reagan is ending his inaugural address, Iran releases 52 American hostages held for 444 days following the seizure of the U.S. embassy in Tehran.

1937: President Franklin D. Roosevelt is sworn in to a second term in Washington. Roosevelt is the first U.S. president to be inaugurated on January 20, following the ratification of the 20th Amendment to the Constitution, which moved the inauguration date ahead from March 4.

1952: Patricia McCormick debuts in a bullfight in Ciudad Juarez, Mexico, as the first female professional matador from the United States.
