DECEMBER 2
1961:In a televised address, Cuban leader Fidel Castro declares that he is a Marxist-Leninist and that communism will dominate Cuban politics.

1763: The Jewish community of Newport, R.I., dedicates the Touro Synagogue; it remains the oldest existing synagogue in the United States.

1954: The U.S. Senate votes to censure Sen. Joseph McCarthy for behavior that was "contrary to senatorial traditions" after he launched unsubstantiated accusations of communist activities against hundreds of Americans.
