1989:"D'oh!" Homer, Marge, Bart, Lisa and Maggie get their own half-hour prime-time show, as the first episode of The Simpsons, created by Matt Groening, premieres on Fox. The show, now in its 23rd season, holds the records for being the longest-running American sitcom, animated program and prime-time entertainment series.

1903: The age of air travel begins when brothers Wilbur and Orville Wright get off the ground for 59 seconds over the sand dunes near Kitty Hawk, N.C. The motorized biplane glider Wright Flyer covers a distance of 852 feet during its longest flight of the day.

1996: Ghanaian diplomat Kofi Annan is confirmed by the United Nations General Assembly as the seventh secretary-general of the U.N.
