1970:President Richard Nixon meets Elvis Presley at the White House, where the King of Rock 'n' Roll presents the president with a Colt .45 pistol and offers to help use his celebrity in support of the Nixon administration's "war on drugs."

1620: An exploring party of Pilgrims from the Mayflower step onto land in the Americas for the first time, in present-day Plymouth, Mass.

1937: Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs premieres at the Carthay Circle Theatre in Los Angeles. The classic movie, which cost a hefty $1.5 million to make, is the result of the work of 750 artists, who created more than 1 million drawings for Walt Disney's first full-length, color animated film.
