DECEMBER 19
1974:Nelson A. Rockefeller is sworn in as vice president, replacing Gerald R. Ford, who was sworn in as vice president when Spiro T. Agnew resigned and then as president when Richard M. Nixon resigned.

1777: Gen. George Washington settles his troops at Valley Forge, Pa., commencing a winter-long battle against the elements. Estimates of how many troops died during the encampment are as high as 3,000.

1998: President Bill Clinton is impeached by the House of Representatives on charges of perjury and obstruction of justice. He is the second president, after Andrew Johnson, to face a Senate impeachment trial. Like Johnson, he was acquitted.
