TODAY IN HISTORY

OCTOBER 18
1977:New York Yankees outfielder Reggie Jackson earns the nickname "Mr. October," becoming only the second player in baseball history (after Babe Ruth) to hit three home runs in a World Series game. Jackson's feat is even more impressive as his homers came off of three pitchers; he will be named World Series MVP.

1950: Connie Mack ends his career as manager of baseball's Philadelphia Athletics. Mack, 87, had spent 50 years and 7,755 games with the team.

1960: Despite managing the team to 10 pennants and seven World Series titles, Casey Stengel is fired by the New York Yankees. A few days later, Stengel comments: "I'll never make the mistake of being 70 again." Two years later, Stengel will be back at the helm with the expansion New York Mets.
