OCTOBER 13
1958:The beloved Paddington Bear makes his first appearance in A Bear Called Paddington. The children's book, written by Michael Bond and illustrated by Peggy Fortnum, depicts the first adventure of a lost yet very polite bear found at London's Paddington Station and adopted by the Brown family.

1860: James Wallace Black snaps the first ever aerial photograph of the United States, while riding in the Queen of the Air balloon over Boston. Black's photo, depicting the Brattle Street neighborhood, is titled "Boston as the Eagle and the Wild Goose See It."

1999: District Attorney Alex Hunter in Boulder County, Colo., dismisses the grand jury assembled 13 months earlier to investigate the murder of child beauty queen JonBenét Ramsey, citing the lack of evidence to indict any suspects.
