1991"During Senate confirmation hearings, law professor Anita Hill testifies that Supreme Court nominee Clarence Thomas sexually harassed her during the time they worked together at the Department of Education and the Equal Opportunity Commission. Categorically denying the accusations, Thomas calls the proceedings "a high-tech lynching," and he will be confirmed by the U.S. Senate in a narrow 52-48 vote four days later.

1968: NASA launches Apollo 7, the first manned mission of Project Apollo, with astronauts Walter M. Schirra, Donn F. Eisele and R. Walter Cunningham aboard. It is the first manned American mission after the Apollo 1 cabin fire that claimed the lives of three astronauts in January 1967.

2002: Former President Jimmy Carter is awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts to end international conflicts and promote human rights and development. Carter is the first U.S. president to win the prestigious award since Woodrow Wilson in 1919.
