SEPTEMBER 1
1985:Using side-scan sonar, a joint French-American expedition led by Jean-Louis Michel and Robert Ballard discovers the wreckage of the RMS Titanic resting on the floor of the Atlantic Ocean, about 370 miles off the coast of Newfoundland.

1964: Masanori Murakami joins the San Francisco Giants as a relief pitcher, becoming the first Japanese player to play in a Major League Baseball game.

1969: Moammar Gadhafi comes to power in Libya in a bloodless coup that deposes King Idris I, establishing himself as chairman of the Revolutionary Command Council.
