AUGUST 21
1911:Leonardo da Vinci's "Mona Lisa," arguably the world's most famous painting, goes missing from the Louvre in Paris. Two years later, the masterpiece is recovered from Vincenzo Peruggia, a former Louvre employee who had walked out of the museum with the painting hidden under his clothes.

1858: Incumbent Sen. Stephen Douglas debates with little-known Republican challenger Abraham Lincoln in Ottawa, Ill., during the race to represent the state in the U.S. Senate. Lincoln and Douglas will engage in seven slavery-focused debates before Douglas ultimately wins the election, yet the much-publicized debates earn Lincoln enough popularity to win the Republican Party's nomination for president in 1860.

1984: Victoria Roche is the first girl to play in the Little League World Series, stepping onto the field in Williamsport, Pa., as a reserve outfielder for the Brussels Sports Association team representing Europe. Her brother, Jeremy, is also an outfielder in the event. The first Little League World Series was held exactly 37 years earlier and won by the hometown Maynard Midgets of Williamsport.
