AUGUST 19
1839:Louis Daguerre announces the science behind his pioneering photographic invention, the daguerrotype, created through a chemical process that preserves a permanent positive image on a metal plate.

1918: Broadway songwriter and U.S. Army draftee Sgt. Irving Berlin debuts his World War I-themed musical Yip Yip Yaphank at the Century Theatre in New York. The musical revue is based on Army life at Camp Upton in Long Island, where Berlin was sent earlier that year, and features "Oh! How I Hate to Get Up in the Morning," a song that all of Berlin's fellow soldiers undoubtedly enjoyed.

1960: The stray dogs Belka ("Squirrel") and Strelka ("Little Arrow"), along with a variety of mice, rats and plants, begin their journey into space aboard Sputnik 5. Although they are not the first animals in space, the next day Belka and Strelka will be the first dogs to return to Earth alive and well, and will become international celebrities. One of Strelka's puppies, named Pushinka, will be given as a gift to Caroline Kennedy, daughter of President John F. Kennedy.
