1969:Jimi Hendrix performs an electric-guitar rendition of "The Star-Spangled Banner" during the last performance of the Woodstock Music and Art Fair in Bethel, N.Y. The highly successful weekend event was supposed to end the previous day, but rain delays and technical problems keep musicians such as Hendrix, Sha-Na-Na and the Paul Butterfield Blues Band performing well into Monday morning.

1587: Virginia Dare is the first child of English parents born in the New World, at Roanoke Island in present-day North Carolina. Three years later, Roanoke colony Gov. John White, who is also Dare's grandfather, will return from England aboard a supply ship to discover that the settlers of the Roanoke colony have all mysteriously vanished, with young Virginia Dare among them.

1991: Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev is placed under house arrest in the Crimea during a coup carried out by leaders of the Soviet army and the KGB, as well as hard-liners in his own administration, who attempt to take over the government. Although the coup will quickly collapse, so will Gorbachev's regime; he will resign in December as the Soviet Union crumbles.
