1973:Hip-hop is born at 1520 Sedgwick Ave. in the Bronx, with 18-year-old Jamaican-born Clive Campbell, otherwise known as DJ Kool Herc, showcasing his innovative break-beat style at a party in the building's recreation room.

1929: Babe Ruth becomes the first Major League Baseball player to hit 500 career home runs, with No. 500 coming off a pitch by Willis Hudlin of the Cleveland Indians in League Park.

1978: American balloonists Ben Abruzzo, Maxie Anderson and Larry Newman lift off from Presque Isle, Maine, beginning the first successful crossing of the Atlantic Ocean by hot air balloon. About 137 hours later, their Double Eagle II will land in a field in Miserey, France.
