1974:Philippe Petit walks on a tightrope suspended between the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center in New York City, successfully crossing the 1,350 feet between the towers eight times, besides kneeling, jumping and lying down on the wire. The French performance artist's stunt is not exactly legal, but all charges are dropped because of the incredible international popularity that Petit earns both for himself and for the unfinished office buildings. Petit's stunt is the subject of the documentary Man on Wire, which will win the Academy Award for best documentary in 2009.

1912: Former President Theodore Roosevelt is nominated for the presidency again, this time on the ticket of the Progressive (Bull Moose) Party, a group of Republicans who disapprove of the nomination of incumbent William Howard Taft. Democratic candidate Woodrow Wilson ultimately wins the election against the divided Republican Party.

1987: Frankie Avalon and Annette Funicello go Back to the Beach in a reunion movie, 24 years after their Beach Party flick opened in theaters accompanied by the surf sounds of Dick Dale. This time, the two teenage stars of the 1960s are cast as the parents of a new generation of wild beachgoers.
