1985:Vice President George Bush announces that New Hampshire socialstudies teacher Christa McAuliffe is the winner of the Teacher in Space Project. McAuliffe and six astronaut crew members will lose their lives in the breakup of the space shuttle Challenger on Jan. 28, 1986.

1946: Future movie icon Marilyn Monroe acts in her first screen test, which lands her a contract with Twentieth Century-Fox.

1980: Teams from the United States and 64 other nationsare notably absent at the opening ceremonies of the 22nd Summer OlympicGames in Moscow, because of a boycott in protest of the Soviet invasionof Afghanistan.
