JULY 27
 1974:The House Judiciary Committee votes 27-11 to recommend a charge of obstruction of justice against President Richard Nixon; it is the first of three charges leveled against the president for his role in the Watergate break-in.

1953: The United States and the People's Republic of China sign an armistice with North Korea to end the three-year-old Korean War. The uneasy truce — never signed by South Korea — is still in effect, and U.N. troops continue to patrol the demilitarized zone between North and South.

1984:
Pete Rose of the Montreal Expos scores his 3,503rd base hit, surpassing Ty Cobb's long-standing record of most career singles in Major League Baseball and helping the Expos win 6-1 over the Philadelphia Phillies.
