JULY 25
1909:French aviator and inventor Louis Blériot pilots his Blériot XI monoplane from Calais, France, to Dover, England, making the first flight across the English Channel (and the first international flight over water) in 37 minutes.

1978: Lesley Brown gives birth to the first "test tube baby," a 5-pound 12-ounce daughter named Louise, in Manchester, England. Louise Brown was conceived through in vitro fertilization, a revolutionary method developed by Patrick Steptoe and Robert Edwards, and she is now the mother of a 4-year-old son.

1999: Less than three years after being diagnosed with testicular cancer, Lance Armstrong wins his first Tour de France, becoming the second American to win the prestigious cycling event. Armstrong will repeat his victory in each Tour de France through 2005, winning an unprecedented seven consecutive years.
