1951:Triple Crown champion Citation runs his last race, winning the Hollywood Gold Cup in Inglewood, Calif., and becoming the first racehorse to win a career total of over $1 million.

1911: Harry N. Atwood is the first pilot to land a plane on the South Lawn of the White House, arriving in style after a flight from Boston, to accept a gold medal from President William H. Taft on behalf of the Aero Club of Washington.

1946: New York pediatrician Benjamin Spock's revolutionary parenting bible, The Common Sense Book of Baby and Child Care, is first published. The enduring classic has sold over 50 million copies and encouraged generations of parents to adopt a practical and loving approach to raising children.
