1971:Lead singer Jim Morrison of the Doors is found dead in a bathtub in his Paris apartment by girlfriend Pamela Courson; the coroner rules the cause of death to be heart failure. Morrison joins Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix and Rolling Stones founder Brian Jones as the latest rock musician in two years to die at the young age of 27.

1940: "Who's on first?" The comic team of Bud Abbott and Lou Costello debuts on NBC radio, initially as a summer replacement for Fred Allen.

1986: On the 100th anniversary of the statue's dedication, President Ronald Reagan officiates the ceremonies on Governor's Island in New York Harbor to unveil the Statue of Liberty after the completion of an $87 million restoration project.
