1972:Former Rat Packer Sammy Davis Jr. finally scores a number one hit on the Billboard Hot 100 chart with "The Candy Man," a popular cover from the film Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. Davis, who had been less than thrilled to record the song, sang it in only one take.

1692: The Salem witch trials turn deadly when Bridget Bishop is hanged in Salem, Mass., for allegedly using witchcraft against her fellow townspeople and a local pig.

1924: Sports broadcaster Graham McNamee provides the first radio coverage of a political convention, announcing the action of the Republican National Convention in Cleveland. McNamee will also cover the more chaotic Democratic National Convention in New York City two weeks later.
