JUNE 17
1775:British troops chase American colonial militiamen from Breed's Hill to Bunker Hill as they retreat to Cambridge, Mass. Although the colonists lose the Battle of Bunker Hill, the skirmish fires up the American cause as British redcoats suffer heavy casualties.

1954: Rocky Marciano, the only never-defeated heavyweight boxing champion, holds on to his title by beating Ezzard Charles at Yankee Stadium in New York; to Charles' credit, he is the only boxer to have lasted 15 rounds against Marciano. Marciano will eventually retire with a 49-0 record.

1972: Five men are arrested in the Watergate complex after breaking into the headquarters of the Democratic National Committee in Washington, D.C. Further investigation reveals that the burglars were financed by President Richard Nixon's Committee to Re-Elect the President.
