1975:Japanese mountaineer Junko Tabei becomes the first woman to reach the summit of Mount Everest, the world’s tallest mountain. In 1992, she will also become the first woman to climb each of the Seven Summits, the highest peaks on the seven continents.

1868: President Andrew Johnson is acquitted by one vote in his impeachment trial in the U.S. Senate, three months after the House of Representatives charged him with 11 articles of impeachment for “high crimes and misdemeanors,” mainly relating to his resistance to Congress’ Reconstruction policies.

1966: The Beach Boys album Pet Sounds is released in the United States. Written and composed mainly by Brian Wilson and featuring songs such as “Wouldn’t It Be Nice” and “Sloop John B,” it is widely considered one of the best albums of all time.
