TODAY IN HISTORY

MAY 13

1938: Louis Armstrong and his band record “When the Saints Go Marching In” for the first time at Decca Studios in New York City, popularizing the gospel tune into an enduring jazz classic.

1995: English mountain climber Alison Hargreaves becomes the first woman, and the second person, to reach the summit of Mount Everest unaided, forgoing the help of Sherpa guides and bottled oxygen tanks.
