MAY 11 
1960:Israeli Mossad agents capture Nazi fugitive Adolf Eichmann in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Eichmann, who had been instrumental in organizing the extermination of European Jews during the Holocaust, had been living under the alias Ricardo Klement and working for Mercedes-Benz in Argentina.

1893: Sports journalist and future Tour de France organizer Henri Desgrange sets the first verified hour speed record by bicycle, traveling 35.325 kilometers (21.95 miles) in 60 minutes at the Buffalo Vélodrome cycling track in Paris.

1978: Margaret Brewer is appointed to the rank of brigadier general, making her the first woman to achieve that rank in the U.S. Marine Corps.
