1955:Sam and Friends, a live-action/puppet show created by puppeteer Jim Henson and his future wife, Jane Nebel, premieres on local Washington, D.C., television channel WRC-TV. The show marks the debut of a variety of Muppet-like characters, most notably Kermit, before he becomes the much-loved Kermit the Frog.

1914: President Woodrow Wilson proclaims the first Mother’s Day in the United States, a national holiday to be celebrated on the second Sunday in May “as a public expression of our love and reverence for the mothers of our country.”

1974: Music critic Jon Landau famously writes: “I saw rock and roll’s future and its name is Bruce Springsteen,” after seeing the Boss open for Bonnie Raitt at a concert in Cambridge, Mass.
