1958:Rock and roll idol Elvis Presley is inducted as a private in the U.S. Army in Memphis, Tenn., before boarding a bus bound for Fort Chaffee, Ark. Presley will serve for two years, mostly in Friedberg, Germany, where he will meet his future bride, Priscilla Beaulieu.
1882: German scientist Robert Koch announces that he has isolated Mycobacterium tuberculosis, the bacterium responsible for causing millions of deaths from the disease tuberculosis. Koch will be awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1905.
2002: Halle Berry becomes the first African American woman to win a best actress Oscar, as she takes home the Academy Award for her performance as Leticia Musgrove, the wife of a death row inmate in Monster’s Ball. Minutes later, another African American thespian, Denzel Washington, will be awarded best actor for his portrayal of corrupt detective Alonzo Harris in Training Day.
