MARCH 17
1969:Golda Meir takes office as the fourth prime minister of Israel and, to date, the Jewish state's only female prime minister.

461:
According to legend, the Christian missionary St. Patrick dies in Downpatrick, Ireland, after a life of preaching the Gospel, building churches and converting the Irish to Catholicism. The legacy of St. Patirck, one of the patron saints of Ireland, is celebrated today with shamrocks, parades, Irish pride and, more inexplicably, green beer.

1762:
Irish soldiers serving in the British colonial army honor Ireland's patron saint with the first St. Patrick's Day parade in New York City.
