1959:Lorraine Hansberry's play A Raisin in the Sun, starring Sidney Poitier and Ruby Dee, opens at the Ethel Barrymore Theatre in New York; it is the first play written by an African American woman to premiere on Broadway.

1941: President Franklin D. Roosevelt signs the Lend-Lease bill into law, permitting the United States to provide supplies to Allied nations during World War II.

1997: Former Beatle Paul McCartney is knighted by Queen Elizabeth II in a ceremony at Buckingham Palace. Sir Paul dedicates his knighthood to his former Beatles bandmates George Harrison, Ringo Starr and the late John Lennon.
