1862:With Lt. John L. Worden commanding the USS Monitor and Lt. Catesby Roger Jones in temporary command of the CSS Virginia (formerly the Union frigate Merrimac), the ships clash for four hours off the coast of Hampton Roads, Va. The first battle between two ironclad naval vessels ends in a draw.

1997: Christopher Wallace, the rapper better known as the Notorious B.I.G., is killed in a drive-by shooting in Los Angeles, possibly in retaliation for Tupac Shakur’s September 1996 murder in the violent East Coast-West Coast hip-hop feud. “Biggie” was 24.

2005: CBS anchorman Dan Rather signs off for the last time from The CBS Evening News, exactly 24 years after he began hosting the program.
