1981:After 19 years, Walter Cronkite signs off for the last time as the anchor of The CBS Evening News, telling viewers “and that’s the way it is: Friday, March 6, 1981.” Dan Rather will begin hosting the program the following week.

1857: The U.S. Supreme Court rules on the Dred Scott v. Sandford case, deciding that an enslaved person cannot sue in federal court or be considered a U.S. citizen. The decision also affirms the constitutionality of extending slavery to the western territories.

1951: The trial of Ethel and Julius Rosenberg begins in Judge Irving R. Kaufman’s New York courtroom. The Rosenbergs, accused of passing nuclear secrets to the Soviet Union, will be convicted of espionage and executed on June 19, 1953.
