1917:Jeannette Rankin takes her seat in the House of Representatives as a Republican representative from Montana. She is the first woman to serve in Congress.

1793: At his second presidential inauguration, George Washington gives a 133-word acceptance speech, the shortest in U.S. history. Exactly 48 years later, William Henry Harrison will give the longest inaugural address, which will require nearly two hours for its 8,445 words.

1933: Franklin D. Roosevelt is inaugurated to his first term. At the height of the Great Depression, the president tells the American people in his inaugural address that “the only thing we have to fear is fear itself.”
