TODAY IN HISTORY

NOVEMBER 18

1928: Walt Disney’s Steamboat Willie cartoon premieres in New York City. The film, starring Mickey and Minnie Mouse, is one of the first sound-synchronized animated movies. Nov. 18, 1928, is celebrated as Mickey Mouse’s birthday by the Walt Disney Company.

1978: Peoples Temple cult leader Jim Jones convinces more than 900 people to drink cyanide-laced Kool-Aid in Jonestown, Guyana, giving rise to the popular expression, “Don’t drink the Kool-Aid.” In a related incident earlier in the day, U.S. Rep. Leo Ryan and four others are killed while investigating alleged human rights violations committed by the Peoples Temple.
