NOVEMBER 17
1970:Douglas Engelbart receives a patent for a device that will move a dot on a video screen to any position. He and his colleagues at the Stanford Research Institute call the wooden block with a push button a “mouse” because of it’s tail-like cord. It is the forerunner of today’s computer mouse.

1558: Queen Elizabeth I succeeds her half sister Mary I as monarch of England and Ireland. The “virgin queen” will rule until her death in 1603 and help establish England as an unquestioned world power at the height of the English Renaissance.

1968: In an event known to NFL fans as the “Heidi Bowl,” NBC interrupts its telecast of an exciting game between the Oakland Raiders and New York Jets to broadcast the made-for-TV movie Heidi, angering viewers who missed the Raiders rally to score two touchdowns in nine seconds for a 43-32 victory over the Jets.
